Early Life

Beulah and Lewis Carey gave birth to Drew Allison Carey in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 23, 1958. In 1966, after his father died from a brain tumor, Carey became especially withdrawn. Marine Corps

When Carey visited his brother Neal in San Diego in 1980, he decided to join the Marine Corps Reserve to find the structure he was looking for. As a result of Carey’s six-year tenure, he gained self-confidence and direction, as well as developed physically and mentally. His military buzz cut, thick, black glasses, and Libertarian ideology were all shaped by this period in his life.

Comedy Career

Lawrence contacted Carey in 1986, a childhood friend who was an actor and radio personality. During Lawrence’s time as a morning radio DJ, Carey helped him write comedy bits for his show. Despite his contribution to the show, Carey’s confidence increased, and he began to perform on local comedy circuits with Lawrence’s encouragement. The Cleveland Comedy Club had hired him as a regular emcee in April after he won a competition. He appeared on two episodes of Star Search the following year. Throughout the next few years, he performed in Ohio and Los Angeles. After appearing on The Tonight Show in 1991, he became a celebrity because of his persistence.
